I've been communicating across a broad range of media for 25+ years -- as a news reporter, editor and foreign correspondent, in online content management, technology conference production and as a media relations executive.
I currently manage my own agency, offering editorial and content development, social media optimization and traditional and online media relations services to clients on both sides of the Atlantic.
I previously was Vice-President and Senior Account Director from 2004-09 at The Pen Group Communications in Miami, where in addition to managing media relations for client accounts that included Nokia, Avanquest Software and others, I developed and deployed the first social media client newsroom of any South Florida public relations agency. I "learned the ropes" of media relations during the dot.com era as defacto inhouse media liaison at Miami-based tech startups 1hemisphere.com and Latin Venture Partners, where as a member of executive management I directed online content development, research and editorial services. From the mid-1980s through 2000, I covered political and business news throughout Latin America, including a dozen years' stint based in Mexico City. My business and finance news coverage has appeared in Institutional Investor, Latin Finance and Market News International; I've written on the unbundling and privatization of state-owned utilities and telecoms operators from Mexico to Argentina for Infrastructure Finance magazine and as Latin America Regional Editor & Senior Analyst for Informa Telecoms & Media newsletters; and, I've covered political and general news throughout the region for The San Diego Union, The San Francisco Chronicle, In These Times and others. I got my start in media with Hearst and John P. Scripps newspapers in Los Angeles.
I also write occasionally at the intersection of news media, technology and media relations at media mindshare and MoMo Miami. You can also follow my online musings at Twitter. Californian by birth, with dual Irish and U.S. citizenship, I'm fluent in Spanish, speak some Italian and Portuguese, hold a Master's degree in Latin American Studies and am author of Mexico at the Crossroads, a book about the roles of religion and politics in the Zapatista rebellion in Mexico's southern state of Chiapas. |
